You’ve probably stopped at a market stall and wondered if the tomato you want to buy has been treated with pesticides.
So that your decision doesn’t depend on trust in the seller, here’s how you can recognize a “whole” and healthy tomato.
To determine if a tomato contains pesticides, it is best to cut it open and examine the inside. Typically, a contaminated tomato will have yellowish stripes and a yellow area in the middle.
Also, make sure the tomatoes are the same size and identical: those that look “perfect” probably aren’t naturally so.
Also avoid packaged vegetables, as they almost always come from production that uses intensive chemicals and pesticides.
However, if the tomato doesn’t look “perfect,” if it has grooves, brown spots, or a slightly odd shape, it’s probably an untreated tomato.
