The more you drink, the weaker your bones get: 3 ‘silent killers’ that drain calcium from your body
Some drinks may seem harmless—they’re even loved for their good taste—but they’re actually “silent killers” that imperceptibly drain calcium from your bones. Over time, this can lead to osteoporosis, brittle bones, and a significantly higher risk of fractures. Your skeleton is the structure that supports your entire body, but it’s surprisingly vulnerable, especially if you have poor eating habits.
Here are three types of drinks that experts say can harm bones if consumed regularly:
1. Carbonated drinks
Soft drinks contain large amounts of phosphoric acid, an ingredient that disrupts the balance between calcium and phosphorus in the body. When phosphorus levels are high and calcium is insufficient, the body compensates by drawing calcium from the bones, resulting in significant loss. Additionally, many soft drinks contain caffeine, which interferes with calcium absorption.
A Harvard University study shows that women who regularly consume soft drinks have a higher risk of hip fractures than those who do not. Children and adolescents, whose bone mass is still developing, are particularly vulnerable: regular consumption of soft drinks at this stage can impair future growth and bone density.
