The strangest early sign of lung cancer.

How to do it:

  • Bring your two index fingers together so that your nails touch at their bases, facing each other.

  • In a healthy person, there remains a small diamond-shaped “window” between them.

  • However, if the fingers are tightly pressed together and there is no space, this may be a sign of thickening of the phalanges, i.e. “drumsticks”.

This test is not a substitute for a medical diagnosis, but it can help you pay attention to unusual changes and seek medical advice.

Why does lung cancer change the shape of fingers?

Scientists still do not know for sure why this symptom appears in some patients, but there is a hypothesis that is supported by many experts.

When the body lacks oxygen, a specific protein is released into the blood:  VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor)  . Its role is to stimulate the formation of new blood vessels and improve blood circulation.

But at the same time, a side effect occurs: the vessels dilate, fluid accumulates under the nails and gradually the fingertips begin to swell.
