2. Soil and Potting
Cacti require well-draining soil to prevent root rot. Use a commercial cactus mix or create your own by mixing:
- 2 parts potting soil
- 1 part coarse sand or perlite
- 1 part pumice or gravel
Pot Selection: Choose pots with drainage holes to allow excess water to escape. Terracotta pots are excellent for cacti as they are porous and help with moisture evaporation.
3. Watering
Cacti are drought-tolerant and prefer infrequent watering. Here’s how to water your cactus effectively:
- During Growing Season (Spring and Summer): Water the cactus thoroughly, allowing water to flow out of the drainage holes. Let the soil dry out completely before the next watering, typically every 2-4 weeks.
- During Dormancy (Fall and Winter): Reduce watering significantly, often to once a month. Overwatering during dormancy can lead to root rot.
4. Temperature and Humidity
Cacti thrive in warm temperatures, ideally between 70°F and 100°F (21°C to 38°C). During dormancy, they can tolerate cooler temperatures, around 50°F to 60°F (10°C to 15°C). Cacti prefer low humidity levels, making them well-suited for dry indoor environments.
