Specific symptoms when affecting the hands, feet, and scalp

Ringworm can also affect specific areas such as the nails, palms, soles, or scalp,
where symptoms are usually more pronounced.

When the nails  (hands or feet) are affected, the following are observed:

  • yellowing and thickening of the nail plate;

  • whitening of the nail matrix;

  • separation or delamination of the nail.

On the palms and soles,  the skin appears dry, white, and cracked; the folds on the joints become more noticeable.

In the scalp  (so-called ringworm of the head), symptoms may include:

  • hair loss in limited areas (alopecia);

  • red spots with a diameter of 1–3 cm;

  • small crusts on the scalp;

  • dry or oily flaking.

Treatment of fungal skin infections

Once the first symptoms appear, it is important to start appropriate treatment.
The doctor will determine the type of fungus or yeast that has caused the infection.

In milder cases, over-the-counter antifungals can be used, but it is advisable to consult a dermatologist or pharmacist to choose the most appropriate treatment.

Therapy can be:

  • topical  – creams, gels, lotions, solutions or shampoos that are applied directly to the affected areas;

  • systemic (oral)  – tablets or capsules in more severe cases.
