The incident is the latest in a series of similar incidents in Asia over the past year. In May, a China Southern Airlines flight from Hangzhou to Shenzhen turned back 15 minutes after takeoff after a passenger’s camera battery and external battery started smoking.

And in January, South Korean authorities reported that a spare battery caused a fire on board Air Busan, in which seven people suffered minor injuries.

Aviation experts recall that lithium batteries can spontaneously combust if they overheat or are defective, which is why airlines require special measures when transporting them.
