Common causes of hives:
Allergic reactions: To food (seafood, nuts, eggs, milk), medications (antibiotics, aspirin, ibuprofen), insect bites, latex
Infections: viral (cold, hepatitis), bacterial (strep throat)
Physical Factors: As described above
Emotional stress: This is not a direct cause, but it can make things worse in sensitive people.
In chronic urticaria, no external cause is often found and, in a significant proportion, an autoimmune mechanism is suspected 1 .
Diagnosis and treatment:
Diagnosis is made by examination and questioning about symptoms and possible triggering factors.
The main treatment is to relieve symptoms and avoid triggers, if known.
Antihistamines: Basic remedy that blocks the action of histamine and reduces itching and rashes.
Corticosteroids: In more severe or persistent cases, these are prescribed for a short period of time.
Avoid triggers: If they are identified (e.g. certain foods or medications), this is the most important measure 1 .
Hives are a common condition and in most cases are mild and transient, but in more severe or prolonged cases it is advisable to consult a doctor.
