One common source is benzoyl peroxide, a widely used ingredient in acne treatments and facial cleansers. While it’s effective for skin care, it also has strong oxidizing properties. When it comes into contact with fabric, it can permanently lighten the dye, creating discoloration that looks similar to bleaching.
The appearance of the marks can offer a helpful clue. On dark-colored towels such as black, navy, or charcoal, the chemical reaction usually affects the deeper pigments first. This leaves behind lighter base tones that appear pink, orange, or yellow rather than pure white. If the spot looks noticeably lighter than the rest of the towel, it’s a sign that the fabric’s color has been altered, not simply stained.
