Tragedy in Lisbon: a young bullfighter dies during his first bullfight in Campo Pequeno
The world of bullfighting in Portugal was shocked after the death of a 22-year-old during his debut in the traditional Campo Pequeno Bullring in Lisbon. The bullfighter, identified as Manuel María Trindade, was part of the Amateur Forcados Group of São Manços and suffered a serious accident that cost him his life after being charged by a bull weighing more than 680 kilos.
According to local reports, the incident occurred on August 22, when Trindade participated for the first time in this scenario considered one of the most important in Portuguese bullfighting. During the slaughter, the animal hit him and the young man was unconscious after the impact. His companions managed to intervene and, with the help of the banderilleros, they managed to move the bull aside so that they could assist him immediately.
The bullfighter was treated in the first instance by Red Cross doctors, who stabilized him in the bullring itself before transferring him to the São José Hospital. However, the injuries led to cardiorespiratory arrest and shortly after it was confirmed that he had suffered brain death. The news of his death caused deep sorrow both in the bullfighting world and in the local community that knew him.
The tragedy was further aggravated when, in the middle of the same event, a 73-year-old spectator identified as Vasco Morais Batista also lost his life in the stands. According to doctors, the man suffered an aortic aneurysm while witnessing the bullfight. Despite attempts at resuscitation, he died after being transferred to the Santa María Hospital.
