Sundowner’s syndrome is a phenomenon that primarily affects older adults, particularly those with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. While not a disease in itself, it is a group of symptoms that occur at a specific time of day and can affect both the patient and their caregivers.

Understanding this syndrome is essential to its effective management and improving the quality of life of those affected.

What is this syndrome?

Sundowning syndrome refers to a series of cognitive and behavioral changes that typically occur in the late afternoon and evening. It is common in patients with neurodegenerative diseases, but can also occur in older adults without prior diagnosis.

Symptoms include agitation, confusion, anxiety, aggression, restlessness, and, in some cases, hallucinations or delusions.
