The present. One of those rare moments when nature reminds us that it can be unpredictable and astonishing, even amidst waste.

They’ve been nicknamed “birds from nowhere” or “gifts of spring.” The story made headlines far beyond our city. It reminded us that life can spring up where we least expect it.

Today, most of these chickens have found homes.

Some live on farms, others have become pets, and still others are cared for by volunteers. I may never know exactly how it happened… but I do know I witnessed something extremely rare: a miracle.
